China's High-speed Rail Technology Goes AbroadChina has signed a contract to provide high-speed trains to Bangladesh in a deal that marks the first time for the export of China-made high-speed rail technology, the Beijing Times reports. Under the contract, China CNR Corporation Limited will assemble 20 high-speed trains with a total of 60 cars for Bangladesh. The terms also require China to supply 20 network control systems, 40 traction inverters and 40 auxiliary inverters. The deal is the first under which China will export its self-improved network control systems and traction inverters after a long period of innovation and improvements to high-speed train technology it originally imported. The move indicates that China is able to compete in the area of high-speed rail technology in the international arena. Network control and traction systems are core high-speed train technologies. Traction systems determine a train's stability and carrying capacity, while network control systems direct the operation of the trains.
High speed rail operator sees first ever profit after five yearsThe China Post news staff --Taiwan High Speed Railway Corp. (THSRC), which runs the bullet train service in Taiwan, reported yesterday its first ever annual profit in five years of operations. But the company also acknowledged that there has been a large operating deficit accumulated over the years. THSRC launched the high-speed rail service five years ago with a combined operating loss of NT$73.5 billion, caused mainly by heavy construction costs and interest burden. But THSRC announced on its corporate website that the company generated a profit of NT$5.78 billion in 2011 due to increasing customers and improvement in administration to slash the total loss to NT$67.7 billion. The financial performance represented the first banner year for the corporation with significant improvement over 2010 which still saw an annual operating deficit of NT$1.2 billion. An executive of THSRC said the healthy corporate financial trend shows that THSRC possesses the potential to continue to improve operations for greater earnings in the years ahead in spite of the obligation of heavy interest repayments. He said that THSRC is required to repay about NT$8.8 billion annually over the coming years as interest on its bank loans.
China CNR stocks climb on Bangladesh orderShares of China CNR Corp, the country's second-largest train maker, gained after media reported that Bangladesh will purchase key high-speed rail technologies from the company's subsidiary. As of 11 am, the company's stocks had climbed 0.97 percent to 4.15 yuan (66 cents) per share on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. China CNR Corp's Dalian Electric Traction Research and Development Center will export traction inverters and network control systems to Bangladesh, according to the reports. This will be the first time for China to export its own traction and network control systems, which are key technologies of such trains, according to a Beijing Times article. The contract contains 20 sets of high-speed rail network control systems, 40 sets of traction inverters and 40 sets of auxiliary inverters, the newspaper said without mentioning how much the contract is worth. China CNR is scheduled to release its financial report on April 28. It said in January that it expected to see its net profit surge over 50 percent in 2011 from a year earlier, on China's booming railway and metro construction. The profit estimate came despite the company's recall of a raft of trains after a deadly accident last summer. On July 23 of 2011, a high-speed train slammed into a stalled train near the city of Wenzhou in the eastern province of Zhejiang, leaving 40 dead and 172 injured. The company recalled 54 trains it supplied for the high-speed rail between Beijing and Shanghai three weeks later. All the trains resumed service in December after modifications and repeated tests, according to the Ministry of Railways.

The railways department plans to put an extra 213 temporary trains into service, so as to increase transport capacity and improve passenger services. Statistics show that on Tuesday, the railway system handled 6.141 million passengers, an increase of 568,000 passengers, or 10.2 percent compared with the same day last year. Of those, 1.613 million travelled by high-speed train. A total of 4,079 trains were operating on Tuesday, including 187 temporary trains. Qingming Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday for mourning the dead, falls on Wednesday this year, but the public holiday runs from Monday to Wednesday.
Engineer defends high-speed rail technology A Chinese engineer recently defended the country's high-speed railway technology, dismissing safety concerns regarding the world's biggest high-speed rail network. collisions," Wang Mengshu, chief engineer of the China Railway Tunnel Group, said during an interview. China's high-speed railways have come under scrutiny in recent months following a deadly train collision that killed 40 people in east China last July. Wang said management failures such as insufficient training for operators were the major safety problems. "A lack of training left operators at a loss when faced with a possible accident," the engineer said. Wang rejected suggestions that the railway network has expanded too fast, stating that the total length of China's railways adds up to 91,000 km, just a third of the total length in the US. The engineer warned against halting high-speed railway construction, as it could cause significant job losses. Railway construction has generated jobs for more than 6 million migrant workers and stimulated the growth of the steel, cement and other raw material sectors, according to Wang. The government has set a goal of building 120,000 km of railways by 2020. Wang said that in order to meet the target, authorities must invest 600 billion yuan annually in railway construction. However, the Ministry of Railways announced in December that it plans to invest 400 billion yuan in railway infrastructure construction in 2012, down from 469 billion yuan in 2011 and a marked decrease from over 700 billion yuan in 2010. |

Central China City to Open First Subway LineCentral China's city of Wuhan will open its first subway line by the end of this year to ease traffic pressure, local authorities said. The first phase of Wuhan's Line 2 subway will cross under the Yangtze river, connecting the city's Wuchang and Hankou districts. "Tunnels linking all 21 of the line's subway stations have been built and construction on the stations' main structures has been finished," said Ma Junrui, vice general manager of the Wuhan Subway Group. As a key transportation route in Wuhan, the line will handle half of the city's cross-Yangtze traffic flow, easing gridlock on bridges over the country's longest river. It is expected to transport at least 600,000 passengers daily by 2015. Building the line will cost a total of 14.9 billion yuan (2.37 billion U.S. dollars). Wuhan lies at the intersection of the Han and Yangtze rivers. Its city proper is divided into three areas by the rivers. Wuhan will build more subway lines over the next five years, bringing the total length of its subway to 180 km, officials have said.
