CSR Ziyang, China, has won a Rs 10.8bn ($US 110.5m) contract from Pakistan Railways (PR) for 50 diesel-electric locomotives. The first 10 locomotives are due to be delivered by the end of this year while the rest will be shipped to Pakistan by the end of May 2014.

Two types of locomotive have been ordered: 25 are 140km/h units to haul passenger trains and the remainder will be for freight operation with a maximum speed of 120km/h. The two versions will have maximum outputs of 1864kW and 2610kW.

PR has suffered a chronic shortage of locomotives in recent years, which has led to a decline in freight and passenger traffic.
