The Minister of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Kamal Nath has lauded the Japanese Government and the Japanese Companies for their cooperation in the development of Metro system in India. He was addressing the Indo-Japan Monorail and Light Rail Transit (LRT) seminar in Delhi today. The Minister said that this cooperation will now be extended to the development of Monorail and (LRT) system in various cities of India. He said that now there is a need to look beyond the traditional metro systems and develop now other systems like Monorail which are very useful for congested areas and are also more environment friendly. These systems, he said, are essential to supplement the Metro system as has been demonstrated by the Japanese example.
As per the recommendations of the working group on Urban Transport for the 12th Five Year Plan, (LRT) should be provided in all cities with a population of million plus. There are 53 cities in this category as per the 2011 census. The State Government of Maharashtra is already constructing two corridors of Monorail in the city of Mumbai. The State Governments of Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have also prepared DPRs for Monorail Project.
Speaking at the conference, the Japanese Senior Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Mr Hiroshi Kajiyama emphasized the need for enhancing cooperation between India and Japan in areas of urban development like transport and drainage. He said that Urban Transport system in India needs to be developed in an integrated mode keeping in mind the growing population of the country.
Addressing the conference, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms. Sheila Dixit said that a Monorail Project is being implemented over a distance of 11 Kms between Shastri Park to Trilok Puri in Delhi. This Project is likely to be completed by 2017. She emphasized that Delhi aims to adopt various pollution free modes of transport whether Monorail or tramp etc to cater to the congested areas of the city.
The report of the ‘High powered expert committee’ (March, 2011) commissioned by Ministry of Urban Development Government of India estimates a total expenditure of Rs. 39 lac Crores on ‘Indian urban infrastructure and services’ by 2031. The expenditure on urban transport and roads together will be more than half the total expenditure at Rs. 23 lac Crores.
