People may pay up to 15 yuan (US$2.47) for a ride after Metro Line 12 and 16 go into partial operation by the year end. Metro officials said they will set ticket prices for different zones to make the rides affordable for more people.

Currently Shanghai Metro charges a minimum fare of 3 yuan for the first 6 kilometers and 11 yuan for the longest route. Metro prices are 1.5 to three times local bus fares.

Shanghai commuters pay 4 yuan on average to travel 15 kilometers from home, statistics showed.

One-day and three-day Metro passes can effectively reduce a rider's cost. A one-day Metro pass costs 18 yuan with unlimited rides within 24 hours. A three-day Metro pass costs 45 yuan with unlimited rides within 72 hours.

A trip from Huaqiao Town in neighboring Kunshan City and Lingang New Town in Pudong, about 100 kilometers, costs only 18 yuan if the rider uses the one-day Metro pass.
