A man was fined 1,000 yuan ($165) for smoking on a high-speed railway train in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region on Wednesday.

The man, surnamed Tang, smoked in the bathroom of train D8253, which runs from Guilin to Nanning. The cigarette smoke triggered the train's alarm system, and the driver had to slow down to take emergency measures in the event that the train was on fire, China News Service reported.

The police found the man in the bathroom and fined him, the report said.

The Regulation on Railway Safety, released by the State Council in August, states that smoking on high-speed trains is prohibited.
