INDIA’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave the go-ahead on December 21 for a Rs 12.5bn ($US 216m) project to construct a second track on the Rajpura - Bhatinda line in southern Punjab.

The 172.6km line is currently saturated and operating at almost 100% of capacity.

The route is considered strategically important as it is used by military traffic to the western border and expansion of power plants and freight terminals on the route are expected to boost freight traffic.

The project is expected to take around five years to complete.
