CHINA Steel Corporation (CSC) has awarded Thales a contract to supply signalling systems for the light rail Circular Line in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The current line has 14 stations and the extension will add another 23. The 22km Circular line will have interchanges at both ends of the two existing metro lines.

The four-and-a-half year contract comprises the signalling, including the supply of interlocking systems, traffic light priority systems, and the automatic vehicle localisation system (AVLS).

Kaohsiung has a population of 2.8 million making it the second largest city in Taiwan. It was also the first city in Taiwan to launch a modern light rail line.
