The process to appoint the Construction Partners for High Speed 2’s London Euston and Old Oak Common stations has been formally launched by project promoter HS2 Ltd. It expects to issue invitations to tender to shortlisted bidders by the end of the year and award the contracts in autumn 2018.

The Construction Partners would be responsible for programme management and procuring, integrating and managing the supply chains. They would work with the station designers and the Euston Master Development Partner which are being appointed under a separate process. Bidders may express interest in and, if shortlisted, tender for one or both Construction Partner contracts, but cannot win more than one ‘unless exceptional circumstances apply’.

‘We’re looking for the best the construction industry has to offer’, said HS2 Ltd Chief Executive Mark Thurston on August 29. ‘Companies that share our commitment to safety, efficiency, environmental protection and value for money. Together we will create two iconic stations; gateways to the capital and to the nation that local communities and the travelling public can be proud to call their own.’

The transport hub at Old Oak Common would enable HS2 passengers to connect to Elizabeth Line services to Heathrow airport and the City of London, as well as services to the west of England and Wales. It would also support regeneration plans for the area.

At Euston new platforms would be built to nearly triple capacity. A staged approach is planned so that existing trains can continue to operate. London Underground’s Euston and Euston Square stations would be linked, with a new ticket hall and provision for the proposed Crossrail 2.

 In parallel with the London stations procurement, market engagement has begun for the two Birmingham stations which have shorter lead-in times. The Birmingham stations procurement process is expected to begin in early 2018 for contract award in 2020.
