Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday expressed his appreciation for the Nairobi-Mombasa railway, which he said has helped enhance travel between the two Kenyan cities.
“Earlier today, I took the SGR train from Nairobi to Mombasa, during which I met and interacted with fellow commuters who shared their interesting experiences about the service. I am glad that the SGR train services have enhanced travel for wananchi (ordinary people) between the two cities,” wrote the president.
The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a modern railway financed, constructed, and operated by China, is also a landmark project of China-Kenya cooperation, which has served more than 2 million passengers since its launch in May 2017, according to a report from Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association.
The mega infrastructure project, which was implemented by China Road and Bridge Corporation, affiliated with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), is also an early result of the China-proposed #BeltandRoad Initiative, which aims to build trade and infrastructure networks connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road routes, Xinhua reported.
Amid the Christmas holiday travel rush, the SGR project is expected to add more trains to the busy route to serve another 38,000 trips between December 14 and January 2, according to China News Radio.
