The Metro Railway in eastern Indian city of Kolkata will phase out its old rakes with new ones made in China, officials said Thursday.

The delivery of the new rakes will start from December this year.

"The first of the 14 rakes ordered from Chinese manufacturer Dalian is scheduled to arrive in December and three more will come in the next three months of the current fiscal year," a local news agency quoted Kolkata Metro general manager P C Sharma as saying. "The remaining 10 rakes will arrive by the end of next financial year 2019-20."

Officials said of the 26 rakes of Kolkata Metro in operation 13 are old and non-AC.

The new rakes have been ordered to boost its services.

Currently, the Kolkata Metro runs over a route length of 27.22 km from southern end of the city to Noapara in the northern outskirts.
