Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems Italy has signed a contract with Hitachi Rail SpA to supply braking and sanitary systems for 50 double-decker regional trains destined for Ferrovie Nord Milano. The new trains will consolidate Knorr-Bremse’s already strong presence in braking systems for Italian regional trains. This latest contract is in addition to the double-decker platform which Hitachi is manufacturing for Trenitalia, and for which Knorr-Bremse is also supplying braking and sanitary systems. Here, the framework agreement is for up to 300 trains.
“We are particularly proud of this contract from Hitachi Rail SpA,” says Simone Mantero, Managing Director of Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems Italy. “This is an important project that was specifically designed and developed by us for the new regional train platform realized by Hitachi. These braking systems with proven reliability and low environmental impact contribute to a high level of passenger comfort and safety.”
The braking system supplied for the Hitachi double-decker trains ensures maximum safety through the use of multiple redundant control systems. The system is based on Knorr-Bremse EP Compact control modules that combine maximum brake control system reliability and maintainability with more compact dimensions and optimized component integration.
The sanitary system, based on Knorr-Bremse’s compact vacuum unit which uses high-performance sluice valves, is synonymous with efficiency and reliability. It features an advanced diagnostics concept, as well as condition-based maintenance algorithms that can increase availability and enable maintenance costs to be reduced.
The Knorr-Bremse compact vacuum unit minimizes water and compressed air consumption per flushing cycle, helping to reduce the environmental impact of the sanitary system. The universal cabin door system complies with the standard for persons with reduced mobility. To date it has delivered more than 200 million kilometers of trouble-free service.
