Taiwan railway police said Thursday they would step up security measures after a young police officer was stabbed to death by a passenger who was found cheating on tickets.
The 26-year-old police officer surnamed Lee was stabbed Wednesday by a male passenger on a train bound for Taipei from Tainan, southern Taiwan, after finding the passenger evading a ticket. Lee died Thursday in hospital.
Police said they would enhance patrols of trains and better arm police officers with defensive equipment. They also called on passengers to better protect themselves against violence and to contact the police in time.
