SHANGHAI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- International logistics giant DHL on Tuesday launched a dedicated air freight service from China to Africa and the Middle East, helping government organizations and enterprises in China to ship 100 tonnes of medical supplies every week.

The service is scheduled to run for four weeks starting from Tuesday. Cargo from across the country will be consolidated in Guangzhou before being air freighted to various destinations in Africa and the Middle East via Dubai, all within two or three days.

Steve Huang, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Greater China, said the air freight service will prioritize the shipment of healthcare and medical supplies for aid and relief efforts in Africa. Some of the goods will also be shipped to Middle East countries.

"As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt trade flows and supply chains, air freight capacity is also significantly affected by travel restrictions and the grounding of commercial passenger airlines," Huang said, noting that the guaranteed uplift of 100 tonnes of goods will ensure that aid relief and medical supplies reach those who need them the most in regions home to 1.6 billion people.
