The governments of Kyrgyzstan and China plan to accelerate talks on the building of a railway line that will connect both countries with Uzbekistan.

The initiative for the building of a rail line was for the first time put forward in 1995. In 2002 China designed a feasibility study of the project, in accordance to which a new railway line should pass through the Torugart, Uzgen and Kara-Suu districts of  Kyrgyzstan - to Uzbekistan. The length of a new rail line is 268 kilometers. The project also involves building of 95 bridges and 48 tunnels.

Currently the sides are discussing the sources of funding of the project. There is a possibility that the majority of funds for the project may be provided by the Chinese government and the country’s banks, in exchange for mineral resources of Kyrgyzstan, which may be transferred into the concession.
